ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Morris Roberson

OverProject.png

Greetings, my name is Morris Roberson and I am running for your County Commissioner for District 4.

My wife Catherine and I live in Nash County. I was born and raised in Nash County and attended Nash County Training School / Nash Central High School, graduating in 1966. I served 4 years in the United States Air Force at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas NV being honorably discharged in December 1971. Following my military service, I worked for the US Postal Service while attending college at the same time. I graduated from the University of Nevada - Las Vegas in 1979 with a degree in Criminal Justice.

While at the Postal Service and after receiving my college degree, I transitioned to the Law Enforcement branch of the Postal Service and became a Postal Inspector in May 1980, a Federal Law Enforcement Agency. I retired from the Postal Inspection Service in June 2000. As a member of this agency I served in several positions investigating various crimes committed against the postal service, its employees and the American public. I served in management positions, on task forces and various special committees making decisions to better secure the mail and assets of the postal service and the safety of its employees.

As a Postal Inspector there were many individuals that I was responsible for arresting and bringing them before the courts. Most persons arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced to jail or prison are released at some point under varying conditions and will return to society. I would coach most of my arrestees on how they need to act and dress when they go into court. I saw this as the beginning of their rehabilitation if they were convicted.

I have been a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) for almost 29 years and have served in many capacities from Chapter President, Regional Vice President, National Financial Secretary and National Trainer. Our Signature training program, The Law and Your Community is presented in partnership with members of the Department of Justice, DOJ. I have been an editor of the program and have presented the program in various communities across the country to include police agencies. This program was designed to teach younger members in our communities how to interact with law enforcement to ensure their personal safety and reduce unnecessary charges or harm.

In January 2007 I took advantage of an opportunity to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, VCU, due to an unexpected vacancy in a class. Through this opportunity I was awarded a Master of Science in Criminal Justice in December 2008.

In January 2012, I started teaching in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department at Virginia Union University, VUU located in Richmond, Virginia. I started as an Adjunct Professor and eventually was awarded a position as an Associate Professor. In these positions you not only taught in the classroom, but you were also an advisor for students, served on various committees and attended all the major school functions. As the President of the Central Virginia Chapter and of NOBLE and with my association with the students in the Criminal Justice Department, I was able to encourage some students to participate in NOBLE activities, have one-on-one interaction with individuals in Law enforcement and this helped some to get positions in various law enforcement organizations.

On November 3, 2007 I was able to get members from the eight former black high schools in Nash and Edgecombe counties and Rocky Mount to come together to discuss the idea of us all banding together for a common purpose. All the schools have their own alumni association where they provide scholarships to students going to college. I was looking at an organization that could aid groups or organizations that were helping youth to keep them out of trouble to give them the chance to at least complete high school. We organized and we are still helping our children. We are the North Carolina Association of Black High School Alumni and have member schools from eight counties in North Carolina

MY THREE AREAS OF FOCUS

-Health Care

-Education

-Criminal Justice

VISION & GOALS

MORRIS ROBERSON FOR NASH COUNTY COMMISSIONER - DISTRICT 4

Criminal Justice

My vision for our inmate population is to ensure we have the safest and most secure facility possible not only for the inmates but for our dedicated staff that are responsible for their safekeeping. We must remember that inmates are also someone's mother, father, sister, brother or child. Statistics indicate that 95-98% of all persons incarcerated will be returning to the community one day and they will be our neighbors. They will also need employment when released or there is a chance they may reoffend.

Education

Education is the key to everyone's tomorrow and especially our children. There has been reports of some schools in our area that are receiving failing grades. It appears that if the schools are failing then our children are not getting what they deserve. I want to work with the schools that are not meeting the standards and ensure our children receive the best education possible. We must also understand that the education of our children is everyone's responsibility, from home to school and back home. Now, home is playing a much larger role in the education of our children than ever before with the current pandemic we are experiencing.

Health Care

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has exposed how vulnerable we are physically and mentally to disasters when we are not prepared. Health care is an essential need for each of us to ensure the best physical and mental conditioning possible for each of us. I plan to do what I can to promote health care for all. A healthy individual can easily be infected by an unhealthy person that for whatever reason do not have access to health care facilities.
